Gov. Samuel Ortom |
While workers in the state have continued to groan over their unpaid salary for five months running, the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has assured that he was already doing everything in his power to ensure the payment of their salaries soon.
The Governor who recently travelled to South Africa with President Muhammadu Buhari stated that he used that opportunity to discuss the salary issue as well as the debt burden of the state among other things with him.
While noting that he was also seeking other ways of borrowing money to offset the salary arrears, the Governor who sympathized with the workers over their predicament urged them to be a little more patient assuring that their pain would soon be a thing if the past.
Also, the Governor said he recently paid a courtesy call on the country director of World Bank, Marie Francoise Marie-Nelly, in her office in Abuja to solicit assistance from the bank particularly in the agriculture, poverty reduction and capacity building sectors.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser (Media and ICT), Tahav Agerzua, the Governor said, “I see the World Bank as a partner for progress, for adding value to the development of the state particularly in agriculture and poverty reduction.”
“We solicit assistance in capacity building and other support programs, we’ll partner with you and fulfill our obligations.”
According to him the bank has a reservoir of expertise in several areas which the state could leverage upon in the efforts to tackle challenges of development.
Governor Ortom pledged that his administration would fight corruption and reduce it to zero level in order to ensure that whatever is appropriated for projects will surely be utilized for that purpose.
