Wenger flattered by England link

Nwankwo Samuel C.
Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger, has admitted he is flattered by speculations linking him with the England job, but insisted the Gunners are his priority.
The Football Association is currently searching for a new coach for the Three Lions, after Sam Allardyce quit the role on Tuesday after only one match in charge.
U-21 coach, Gareth Southgate, has been appointed as a temporary boss for their next four matches.
Wenger has been linked with the job in the past and it is believed the FA will try again for the Frenchman.
Speaking after their 2-0 win over Basel in the Champions League on Wednesday, he said: “My priority has always been this club. Until the end of this season I am here and completely focused on that.
“I said many times my priority was towards Arsenal Football Club, I will have to assess how well I do until the end of the season.”
Wenger also praised his team, who have extended their unbeaten run to eight matches.
“I would like to congratulate my team for the quality of football they produced. The first half was top, top class,” he told the club’s official website.
“We have to be ambitious but also keep our feet on the ground. We know how we want to play but we still want to get better.”

I’ll make Arsenal great again — Dangote

Nwankwo Samuel C.
AFRICA’s richest man is planning to buy Arsenal within four years.Aliko Dangote – who is said to be worth £8.3billion – revealed his intentions to purchase the Premier League giants last year.

Dangote told Bloomberg: “Maybe three to four years. The issue is that we have more challenging headwinds. I need to get those out the way first and start having tailwinds. Then I’ll focus on this.”

                            Alhaji Aliko Dangote

Most of Dangote’s vast wealth is tied up in Lagos-based Dangote Cement Plc – whose stock is down 4.7 per cent on last year.

That means Gunners fans Dangote has lost £3.3billion this year due to the falling value of the Nigerian currency.

Dangote added: “It’s not about buying Arsenal and just continuing with business as usual.

It’s about buying Arsenal and turning it around. I’ve run a very successful business and I think I can also run a very successful team. “Right now, with what we’re facing, over $20 billion of projects, I cannot do both.”

Gunners fans have been on current majority shareholder Stan Kroenke’s case after another disappointing summer of spending.

Arsenal last won the Premier League title in 2004 and have only lifted two Fa Cups since.

Korenke hold 67 per cent of Arsenal Holdings Plc – the owner which trades on the ICAP Securities & Derivatives Exchange

Fans protested at games at the end of last season to get a new owner and Arsene Wenger removed as manager.

Aguero, Iheanacho are going to score a lot of goals – Guardiola

Unknown

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has said that he cannot take the glory for Sergio Aguero’s fantastic scoring rate.
The Argentine striker returned to the team on Wednesday and scored a hat-trick in their 4-0 demolition of Borussia Mochengladbach in the Champions League.
Aguero was replaced by Kelechi Iheanacho, who also got on the scoresheet.
"Sergio is good because he’s good,” Guardiola told a post-match news conference. “He was good with Manuel [Pellegrini], he is good with the national team, hopefully he is good with us.
“His talent in the box to score goals is natural; I can teach absolutely nothing.
“He has to know that behind him there is a team that is going to help him if he is going to help us. That is what I have to convince him.
“If he continues to help us in that way he is going to score a lot of goals, like Keli [Iheanacho], like all our strikers.”

FIFA on Thursday ordered a life ban against Chuck Blazer, a central figure in the corruption scandal that has engulfed world football, for taking millions of dollars in bribes. “Mr Blazer committed many and various acts of misconduct continuously and repeatedly during his time as an official in different high-ranking and influential positions at FIFA and CONCACAF,” said a statement.

The eight men are among nine football officials indicted on corruption charges the United States Justice department confirmed on May 27, 2015.fia

“In his positions as a football official, he was a key player in schemes involving the offer, acceptance, payment and receipt of undisclosed and illegal payments, bribes and kickbacks as well as other money-making schemes.”

The ban on the 70-year-old American was ordered by FIFA’s ethics committee adjudicatory chamber after investigations by football’s world body and US prosecutors.

The one-time powerbroker of North American football is a former ally of FIFA leader Sepp Blatter who has agreed to step down because of controversy over US and Swiss investigations into the world body and World Cup tournaments.

Blazer has given evidence to US authorities investigating football corruption and is gravely ill in a New York hospital suffering from cancer. Blazer has acknowledged to US investigators that he took more than $11 million in bribes from 2005 to 2010.

He has been working undercover for US prosecutors since 2011 even wearing wire taps to record conversations with other FIFA officials. Media reports say he gained substantially more during his time running the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football, or CONCACAF.
Football racketeer

Blazer was CONCACAF general secretary from 1990 until 2011 when he was forced to step down. He was also a FIFA executive committee member from 1996 to 2013 and a vice president of the US Soccer Federation.

As part of his deal with the US authorities he has agreed not to oppose any ban imposed on him by FIFA or any other football governing body. Blazer has pleaded guilty to 10 counts, including racketeering, tax evasion, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracies.

As a FIFA official he influenced the award of World Cup tournaments. And he has admitted to US investigators that he took bribes. As the powerbroker of US soccer he travelled by private jet, kept two multi-million-dollar apartments in New York — one reportedly for the use of his cats — and a home in the Bahamas.

Behind his back, he was known as “Mr Ten Percent,” a nod to the kickbacks on which he allegedly insisted. Now wheelchair-bound, he formally pleaded guilty at a closed-door court hearing in Brooklyn in November 2013 — one of four people to plead guilty as part of the sweeping US investigation.

Since then the US Justice Department has stunned FIFA by targeting a coterie of top officials from the Americas as part of the probe. Seven FIFA officials were detained in a raid on a Zurich hotel on the eve of a FIFA congress at which Blatter won reelection.

The seven are now fighting extradition to the United States and are among 14 new figures facing charges as part of the same inquiry which snared Blazer.

In parallel, Swiss authorities are investigating the attribution of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar. Amid corruption allegations, both countries have strongly denied any wrongdoing. FIFA had suspended its investigation into Blazer because of his “ill health” but reopened it in December 2014, leading to his lifelong ban.

Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote insists on Arsenal takeover

Unknown
Dangote keen on Arsenal takeover
Nigerian  billionaire Aliko Dangote says he is still keen on buying English Premier League side Arsenal.

The 58-year-old, who is Africa’s richest man having amassed a fortune in the region of $18.4 billion (£12.2 billion), is currently the 67th richest man in the world.

Dangote, who has made his fortune through various operations including cement manufacturing, sugar supply and oil investments, says that he will concentrate on getting the refinery on track before giving all it takes to get Arsenal.

“When we get this refinery on track, I will have enough time and enough resources to pay what they are asking for,” he told the BBC Hausa service.

“There were a couple of us who were rushing to buy, and we thought with the prices then, the people who were interested in selling were trying to go for a kill.

“We backtracked, because we were very busy doing other things, especially our industrialisation."

The Kano-born billionaire and Arsenal fan gave a not too polite verdict on the Gunners and why he wants to take it over.

“They are doing well, but they need another strategic direction,” he added. “They need more direction than the current situation, where they just develop players and sell them,” he concluded.

Stan Kroenke is Arsenal’s majority shareholder, with the American owning 66.64 per cent of the club’s parent company, Arsenal Holdings Plc.

Dangote has criticised Arsene Wenger, claiming that the 65-year-old "needs to change his style a bit" and warning that the club "need new direction" in order to become more successful.

FIFA 2014 Women’s Coach of the Year nominee, Peter Dedevbo, has been re-appointed as the coach of the Nigeria U-20 Women’s national team by the Nigeria Football Federation.

The NFF made the announcement on their twitter handle and website on Wednesday.

The federation said the appointment became imperative to enable the coach begin preparations for the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

Two countries will represent the continent at the competition, which features 16 countries and is in its eighth edition.

Dedevbo led the Falconets to the final of the 2014 edition in Canada where they lost to Germany. His feat, which was the first by an African, earned him a nomination for the 2014 FIFA Women’s Coach of the Year.

The NFF also stated that Dedevbo will return with his assistants; Toyin Ayinla, Wemimo Olanrewaju and Auwal Bashar.

Chairman of the Technical and Development Committee, Felix Anyansi-Agwu, told thenff.com, “The Peter Dedevbo-led crew did well to get the Falconets to the final of the U-20 World Cup in Canada last year. Luis Suarez will get better for Barcelona

Unknown

Luis Suarez "can only get better" after enjoying a superb first season with Barcelona, according to team-mate Andres Iniesta.

Uruguay international Suarez moved to Camp Nou in a reported £75million deal from Liverpool in July.

The forward has scored 24 goals in all competitions this term and has played a vital role in helping Barcelona to the Liga title, as well as the finals of the Copa del Rey and UEFA Champions League.

Iniesta has seen first-hand Suarez's impact and tipped the former Ajax star to continue reaching new heights.

"He is playing in his first season, so to be in this situation is extra motivation especially having played such an important role in the team," Iniesta said ahead of Saturday's Copa showpiece against Athletic Bilbao.

"He's a signing who will be with the team for many years - he's a spectacular player in great form.

"He's adapted perfectly and can only get better. Let's see what he can do in these last two games."

Suarez has formed part of a fearsome attacking trio alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar, a strikeforce Iniesta believes is unparalleled in world football.

"I've been lucky to play behind some of the greatest strikers at this club and in the world. Having those three, there's no doubt, it's something you can't compare with," he added.

"So, I think at the current moment we have the best strikers in world. I think the future can only get better because they're relatively young with plenty of potential.

"The real winners are Barca. I played with [Thierry] Henry, [Samuel] Eto'o - great strikers - but let's say right now the threesome we have now are unique."

Ex-Portuguese footballer has called on FIFA president Sepp Blatter to resign

Unknown

Luis Figo has described Sepp Blatter's re-election as FIFA president as a "dark day" for football, and called on him to resign if he truly cares about the sport.

Blatter was handed a fifth term as head of the world governing body when sole challenger Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein withdrew before the second round of voting at the FIFA Congress in Zurich on Friday.

The Swiss subsequently vowed to leave a "strong" body for his successor, after damaging allegations of corruption have rocked the organisation over the past week.

Nine past and present FIFA officials were among 14 people indicted on charges of racketeering, conspiracy and corruption by United States authorities on Wednesday.

Former Portugal international Figo withdrew as a candidate to face Blatter prior to the Congress, but he believes that the 79-year-old should not have the opportunity to rebuild FIFA's damaged reputation.

"It was another dark day in Zurich," Figo posted in a statement on Facebook. "FIFA has lost, but above everything, football has lost and everyone who truly cares about it has lost too.

"Mr Blatter had a very cynical reaction when he said that he couldn't control everyone. It offends everyone's intelligence. These persons, whom Mr Blatter has promoted through years, turned, with him, FIFA in to a decadent organisation.

"If Mr Blatter were minimally concerned about football, he would have given up on re-election. If he has a minimal of decency, he will resign in the next few days."

UEFA president Michel Platini had backed Prince Ali's campaign and was also among those to call for Blatter to step down in the aftermath of Wednesday's arrests.

UEFA had also stated that its member nations could boycott all FIFA competitions " including the World Cup " should Blatter be re-elected.

Following the vote - which was decided only after neither candidate had gained the required two-thirds majority in the first round of voting - Platini praised Prince Ali's efforts, saying: "I am proud that UEFA has defended and supported a movement for change at FIFA. Change which in my opinion is crucial if this organisation is to regain its credibility.

"I congratulate my friend Prince Ali for his admirable campaign and I take the opportunity to thank all the national associations who supported him."

English Football Association (FA) chairman Greg Dyke was also vocal in his belief that FIFA required change and he questioned whether Blatter would remain in office for the full four years of his term.

"The idea Blatter could reform FIFA is suspect. I'd be very surprised if he was still in this job in two years time," he told Sky News.

"The events of this week were so dramatic for FIFA, but I cannot see FIFA reforming itself under Blatter. He's had 16 years to reform it but he hasn't done it."

FIFA under fire: Swiss arrest top global soccer officials in U.S., Swiss corruption cases

Unknown
474833964

Seven of the most powerful figures in global soccer faced extradition to the United States on corruption charges after being arrested on Wednesday in Switzerland, where authorities also announced a criminal investigation into the awarding of the next two World Cups.

The world’s most popular sport was plunged into turmoil after U.S. and Swiss authorities announced separate inquiries into the activities of the game’s powerful ruling body.

U.S. authorities said nine soccer officials and five sports media and promotions executives faced corruption charges involving more than $150 million in bribes. Swiss police arrested seven FIFA officials who are now awaiting extradition to the United States.

Those arrested did not include Sepp Blatter, the Swiss head of FIFA, but included several just below him in the hierarchy of sport’s wealthiest body.

Of the 14 indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice, seven FIFA officials, including Vice-President Jeffrey Webb, were being held in Zurich. Four people and two corporate defendants had already pleaded guilty to various charges, the department said.

The Miami, Florida, headquarters of CONCACAF, the soccer federation that governs North America, Central America and the Caribbean, were being searched on Wednesday, the DoJ said.

“As charged in the indictment, the defendants fostered a culture of corruption and greed that created an uneven playing field for the biggest sport in the world,” said FBI Director James Comey. “Undisclosed and illegal payments, kickbacks, and bribes became a way of doing business at FIFA.”

The arrested FIFA officials appeared to have walked into a trap set by U.S. and Swiss authorities. The arrests were made at dawn at a plush Zurich hotel where FIFA officials are staying ahead of a vote this week where they are expected to anoint Blatter for a fifth term in office.

“DIFFICULT MOMENT”

FIFA said the arrests were a “difficult moment” but Blatter would seek a fifth term as FIFA head as planned and the upcoming World Cups would go ahead as intended.

Separate from the U.S. investigation, Swiss prosecutors said they had opened their own criminal proceedings against unidentified individuals on suspicion of mismanagement and money laundering related to the awarding of rights to host the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Data and documents were seized from computers at FIFA’s Zurich headquarters, the Swiss prosecutors said.

Officials said that following the arrests, accounts at several banks in Switzerland had been blocked.

The U.S. Department of Justice named those arrested in its case as: Webb, Eduardo Li, Julio Rocha, Costas Takkas, FIFA Vice-President Eugenio Figueredo, Rafael Esquivel and José Maria Marin.

The DoJ said the defendants included U.S. and South American sports marketing executives alleged to have paid and agreed to pay “well over $150 million in bribes and kickbacks to obtain lucrative media and marketing rights to international soccer tournaments”.

“The indictment alleges corruption that is rampant, systemic, and deep-rooted both abroad and here in the United States,” U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in a statement.
“It spans at least two generations of soccer officials who, as alleged, have abused their positions of trust to acquire millions of dollars in bribes and kickbacks,” she said.

BILLIONS OF DOLLARS

The international governing body of soccer collects billions of dollars in revenue, mostly from sponsorship and television rights for World Cups.

It has persistently been dogged by reports of corruption which it says it investigates itself, but until now it has escaped major criminal cases in any country.

In particular, the decision to award the World Cup to Qatar, a tiny desert country with no domestic tradition of soccer, was heavily criticized by soccer officials in Western countries.

FIFA was forced to acknowledge that it is too hot to play soccer there in the summer when the cup is traditionally held, forcing schedules around the globe to be rewritten to move the cup.

Qatar’s stock market fell sharply as news of the Swiss investigation emerged. A Russian official said his country would still host the 2018 World Cup.

Three years ago FIFA hired a former U.S. prosecutor to examine allegations of bribery over the awarding of the World Cups to Qatar and Russia, but last year it refused to publish his report, releasing only a summary in which it said there were no major irregularities. The investigator quit, saying his report had been mischaracterized.

Most of the arrested officials are in Switzerland for the FIFA Congress, where Blatter faces a challenge from Jordan’s Prince Ali bin al-Hussein in an election on Friday to lead the organization. Other potential challengers to Blatter have all dropped out the race.

Prince Ali, who has promised to clean up FIFA if elected to the top job, called it “a sad day for football”.

CONCACAF FOCUS

Much of the U.S. inquiry focuses on CONCACAF, whose Trinidadian former boss Jack Warner was regularly dogged by accusations of corruption before he resigned in 2011, at which point FIFA terminated its investigations of him.

U.S. law gives its courts broad powers to investigate crimes committed by foreigners on foreign soil if money passes through U.S. banks or other activity takes place there.

Damian Collins, a British member of parliament who founded the reform group New FIFA Now, said the arrests and could have a massive impact on the governing body.

“The chickens are finally coming home to roost and this sounds like a hugely significant development for FIFA,” he told Reuters.

“It proves that Sepp Blatter’s promises over the last few years to look into corruption at FIFA have not materialized and because he has totally failed to do this, it has been left to an outside law enforcement agency to do the job and take action.”

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is poised to leave Old Trafford this summer after agreeing personal terms with Real Madrid, according to reports in Spain.

Marca are reporting that the 24-year-old star has reached an agreement with the La Liga giants for a deal worth around £4million a year after tax and believed to be between five and six years in length.

The Madrid-based newspaper also suggests that the only thing missing in the deal is for United and Madrid to agree a fee for the player. It could reach upwards of £30m.

De Gea was pictured on a flight to Madrid earlier this week as he took some time off, leading to reports that he was in fact on his way to sign for Los Blancos.

Louis van Gaal is targeting a move for Petr Cech after claims that David de Gea will join Real Madrid this summer.

The Manchester United manager admits he is already preparing for the Spanish goalkeeper’s potential exit.

Rafael Benitez is expected to be installed as the new Real Madrid manager after his season with Italian club Napoli finishes on Sunday.

The former Liverpool manager, 55, has not yet signed a contract with the 10-time European champions but negotiations are at an advanced stage.

Carlo Ancelotti was sacked as Real Madrid manager on Monday after two seasons in charge at the Bernabeu.

Italian Ancelotti, 55, secured Real’s 10th European Cup last season.

But this year they were knocked out by Juventus in the Champions League semi-finals, while Barcelona won La Liga.

True Story!!! Chelsea Manager Jose Mourinho Opens Up On How He Spent One Week In Jail

Unknown
Jose-Mourinho-NL

Jose Mourinho has recounted how he spent most parts of a week in Jail before the 2007 FA Cup final against Manchester United.

The Chelsea manager in an interview with BBC Sports pundit and former footballer, Gary Lineker in a the documentary, The Road to FA Cup Glory, recounted that he had problems with the police concerning his dog in Portugal.

I won the FA Cup but it was a complicated week for me because I was in jail because of my dog,’ Mourinho said in the documenatry.

“It’s an odd story, the vet thought I was taking the dog from Portugal in a private plane and without the legal situation.

“They sent the police to my house to take the dog, but I didn’t let them take the dog. So, because they didn’t take the dog they took me for obstruction to justice.

It was a difficult week – I was in that final but my family was not there because they had to stay in Portugal with the dog, for the dog not to go to jail.”

The week however ended well as Chelsea won the 2007 FA Cup final with a Didier Drogba extra time goal winning Mourinho his first and only FA Cup medal
