Rivers Poly workers beg Wike to reverse sacking

Unknown
THE four hundred thirty-five employees of the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori, sacked by the state government have urged well meaning people of the state to prevail on the government to reverse the decision and recall them to work.

The State Government had on Monday announced the cancellation of the polytechnic workers appointment. Those affected are academic and non-academic staff, who were recently employed by the Rotimi Amaechi administration.

Speaking on behalf of their colleagues, Jekey Lekue, Grace Ikue and Basil Ujobolo urged the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, not to renege on his promise during his inauguration to give hope to the people.

Speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt on Thursday, some of the disengaged workers lamented that they had been searching for job for the past five years before they were eventually employed at the state polytechnic.

They also stated that some of them had to resign from their former place of work after they received their appointment letters from the authorities of the State Polytechnic, Bori, Khana Local Government Area.

Explaining that they went through a painstaking process before they were employed, the sacked workers recalled that they had supervised the last examination in the school before the announcement that their employment had been cancelled.

“We are calling on well meaning Rivers people to do justice to this issue. We beg Rivers people to step in. Governor Nyesom Wike gave the state hope on May 29, 2015. We have already been captured in the data base of the state. Our governor should not do this to us,” they further appealed.

In another development, the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has disbanded the Rivers State Road Traffic Management Agency known as TIMARiV.

Reacting to the sacking of the 435 RIVPOLY workers, the Special Adviser on Media to the State Governor, Sir Opunabo Inko-Tariah, stated their appointment was marred by irregularities.

Inko-Tariah said, “The appointment of the staff were marred with irregularities. Such an appointment had to be terminated to look into the whole issue holistically.

“The sacking was premised on irregularities. So many procedural obligations were breached and as a result, the exercise was deprived of due process.”

Speaking on the Rector of the polytechnic, Dr Obiando Elechi Amadi, who was sent on a compulsory leave, Inko-Tariah pointed out that it was as a result of a case of official misconduct on the rector’s part.

On the disbandment of the state traffic management agency, the governor’s aide specifically said that some of the officials of TIMARIV were making illegal seizure of vehicles in order to extort money from innocent citizens.

According to him, “Many of those guys were making illegal and embarrassing seizure of vehicles on the roads and this is becoming an eyesore. Let us leave politics aside; it is a known fact all over the state that TIMARIV had constituted itself into a public nuisance.

“The action of its staff had, in most cases, brought River State into disrepute. What they do in most cases is illegal. They are not supposed to struggle for the steering with the driver of a vehicle, but this is what they often do.

“The state government can no longer cope with the excesses of this TIMARIV staff. It was on that premises that the governor decided that it should be disbanded.

“Governor Nyesom Wike also instructed that all seized vehicles should be released with immediate effect. He further instructed that nobody should pay a kobo to TIMARIV.

“If anybody should be refused or deprived of the retrieval of his/her vehicle, such a person should report to the nearest police station and the TIMARIV staff in question will be dealt with,” Inko-Tariah added.

MTN Nigeria Communications Limited (MTNN) moves to withdraw the abandoned Universities Connect Library at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Lagos.

The digital library was donated to UNILAG in 2005 when internet enabled phones were still a luxury. The digital library has been placed under lock and key in the last five years and much to the dissatisfaction of the donor organisation.

In-house sources at the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) office of the telecommunication outfit informed newsmen that the evacuation processes would begin soon, even as it was gathered that troubled Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo Campus may be the new beneficiary.

MTN Corporate Social Executive, Akinwale Goodluck, recently at the Lagos State Support Our School Initiative Breakfast Meeting, said the world-class facility, a pride of his organisation, had been locked up for years, because the school management could just not keep to agreements in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2004.

Goodluck, who gave credit to the Lagos State government and the ministry of education on effective partnership till date, said a state-owned tertiary institution would be the new beneficiary of the digital library when it was retrieved from UNILAG.

“We are happy to transfer this facility to Lagos State,” Goodluck said.

Authorities of UNILAG, however maintained that they had given the telecommunication outfit their blessing to remove the facility, after sections of the second agreement were breached by the mobile outfit.

NYSC Taraba State Posts All Corps Members To Rural Communities For Primary Assingment

Unknown
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) yesterday said over 90% of corps members deployed to Taraba State were posted to serve in rural communities as classroom teachers.

This was made known by the state's NYSC Coordinator Freeman Tumba, during the closing ceremony of the 2015 Batch 'A' orientation course.

According to him, this is to ensure that the corps members contribute meaningfully to the educational development of the state during their service year. He emphasizes, that NYSC discourages posting corps members to ministries, banks and parastatals on grounds that those posted to such places are often left redundant throughout their service year.

He urged the corps members to be mindful of the culture of people in their host communities and always dress decently.

The Acting governor of the state, Sani Abubakar Danladi, assured the corps members of adequate protection and security and advised them to explore the socio-economic potentials in the state to add value to their lives.

Unknown
The Governing Council of Osun State University, UNIOSUN, has terminated the appointments of three principal officers of the state institution with immediate effect..

These are the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bashir Okesina, The Registrar, Dr. Julius Faniran and Bursar Alhaji Fatai Lasisi.

The termination of their appointments followed the recommendations of a visitation panel set up by the Visitor to the university, Governor Rauf Aregbesola to look into allegations of financial mismanagement in the institution.

The ASUU Chapter of the institution has however condemned the action. According to a statement by the Chairman, Dr. Abiona Oluseye and eight others, the sack violated the principle of equity and fairness.

The statement reads: "It is instructive to state that a visitation panel was constituted by
the Governor of the State of Osun and the report submitted.

ASUU-Uniosun is of the opinion that it would have been better for the council to wait for the white paper on the report to be released by the Governor before assuming the position of a judge in their own case.''

"Against the backdrop of the on-going,  ASUU-UNIOSUN hereby calls for the immediate reversal of the decision pending the outcome of the white paper on the matter.''

2015 University of Lagos {UniLag} Best Graduating Student 2015

Unknown
korede_akinpelu

The overall best graduating student of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, Akoka, Lagos, western Nigeria, Korede Akinpelumi, has revealed how the death of his father in his final semester on campus spurred him to academic greatness.

The 21-year old Chemical Engineering graduate, who had a total of 4.96 Cumulative Point Grade Average, CGPA, told P.M.NEWS in an interview, that he lost his father midway into his final exams in school.

Akinpelumi stated that the tragedy did not deter him from continuing with his quest to excel academically. He said rather it propelled him to ensure that he finished on a high.
“I had always known that I would do well in the tertiary institution because I was the best student at the International School, Lagos, ISL, and expectations had been high when I got here.
“In my second year here, I was already on a 5.0 so I thought I just needed to do a little more to end my first degree as one of the best placed students.
“However, I lost my dad in August last year, midway into my final exams. It was the most challenging period for me throughout my stay in UNILAG because he had such a huge influence on my academic quest.
“So, for me to still come out with a 5.0 grade that semester, despite the challenges, it was just God. That was the defining moment for me at the University of Lagos.”
Asked what he will do with his really impressive grades, the second of his parents’ three children, stated that he was not thinking about what comes next. Instead, he is looking forward to how he will handle what comes after graduating.

“I am really not bothered about the next thing that happens. I am only particular about how I respond to what comes next. Quite a number of offers have come already and I am just trusting God to know which of them I should accept.
“I would not like to mention names now, but offers from institutions and companies of repute have come. So, I am just seeking God’s guidance to know which one to go for.
“About two to three companies have already shown interest in me to work with them,” he said.

Unknown

According to the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) , Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, the post-UTME exams conducted by higher institutions will soon come to an end with the introduction of CBT Mode in UTME.

He mentioned that following the introduction of CBT examination malpractice as well as will be completely eradicated with time.

Post-UTME test was introduced because of the level of malpractice that trailed the UTME examinations in the past.

However, the JAMB boss is of the opinion that when examination malpractice in UTME is completely eradicated with the introduction of CBT there will definitely be no need for post-UTME in higher institutions.

He further stressed that the CBT Mode was also introduced to prepare candidates to face the academic challenges in higher institutions.

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is poised to leave Old Trafford this summer after agreeing personal terms with Real Madrid, according to reports in Spain.

Marca are reporting that the 24-year-old star has reached an agreement with the La Liga giants for a deal worth around £4million a year after tax and believed to be between five and six years in length.

The Madrid-based newspaper also suggests that the only thing missing in the deal is for United and Madrid to agree a fee for the player. It could reach upwards of £30m.

De Gea was pictured on a flight to Madrid earlier this week as he took some time off, leading to reports that he was in fact on his way to sign for Los Blancos.
