The Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, was one of the witnesses to the ghastly accident that claimed the life of a middle-aged woman and her grand-daughter.
The accident which occurred close to Chief Eugene Obiagwu Bus-stop, Awka-Etiti, along Nnobi-Ekwulobia road of Anambra state, left the governor shaken to his core and emotional. The lorry reportedly smashed into some shops within the area, crushing the victims.
The governor was on his way back from a burial at Mbosi in Ihiala Council Area of the state when he witnessed the accident.
An eyewitness at the scene alleged that the accident was as a result of brake failure.
“The driver, on seeing the level of destruction caused by the accident, immediately jumped down from the vehicle and fled into the bush,” the eyewitness said.
Obiano reportedly commanded his convoy to stop, giving orders for the convoy ambulance to take the corpses to a nearby mortuary.
Describing the accident as unfortunate, Obiano reemphasized the need for motorists to be extra careful and ensure that their vehicles are in proper condition.
Deeply moved, Obiano consoled the bereaved family as well as the entire Awka-Etiti community over the incident while assuring them that the government would assist with the burial of the deceased.
According to Southern City News, the deceased were reportedly on their way back from a burial when the lorry with Registration Number Rivers XB-751-PHC, crushed them to death.
