Outgoing Governor of Kaduna State, Mukhtar Yero, said on Thursday that the state’s debt profile as of May 21, was N73bn.
He said state had a balance of N8bn in the state’s treasury, adding that the state was not owing its workers any month’s salary.
Yero stated this in his handover notes to the state’s Governor-elect, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House, Kaduna, on Thursday.
The governor stated that the debt comprised N46bn from local government sources, N2bn internal bonds and N23bn pending arrears to contractors in the state.
Meanwhile, in his response, the governor-elect noted that the situation on the ground was not as envisaged.
He, however, added that the Transition Committee of the APC in the state would scrutinise the handover notes.
He urged the outgoing governor to pray and give his administration the necessary support so as to make the state great again.
“The situation is not as bad as we thought. Pray for us and give us your support so that we can succeed in bringing development to the state,” he said.
